Nestled in the south-west corner of the beautiful state of Colorado is a wonderful gem - the city of Salida

. It has been designated as one of the largest historic districts in the state. Established in the late 1800s on the development of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, Salida is a testament today to the dreams, grit, and determination of the men and women who built it.Downtown Salida's history began with the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad.Salida once was the western division point on General William Jackson Palmer's line to Leadville. In the 1880s the little city on the D&RG main line to the West thrived. But major blazes wiped out significant sections of downtown in 1886 and 1888.There are 78 historic buildings built between 1888 and 1905 that one can tour and learn about the early beginnings of the turn of the century architecture - medieval in nature. Palace Hotel, Laura Evans Building, Manhattan Hotel, Denver and Rio Grande Western Depot, F Street Bridge - this is just a few of them. There's also a different kind of an interesting thing to see - Salida Steam Plant, which was constructed in 1892. The unit was in service until 1958, and now old generator stands as a pioneer monument outside the Cherokee Generating Station in Denver. Mountain, road, and kid bikes are available, along with trail maps, for those who wish to take a leisurely ride through town. In addition, there are several cafes, bed and breakfasts, and antique shops. For those with an artistic nature; folk and environmental art prevails. Also - glass works, gem factories, pottery, wood, leather, and metal crafts abound. There is something for everyone.There is much more to see and visit in the Pikes Peak region.
