Sales Jokes Will Give You More Than A Laugh
Before conducting their research a UK firm determined what it was that employees sought in the ideal work environment
. The top 3 responses included acknowledgement of effort and achievement, a cooperative team environment and humour in the workplace.
From this it was decided to conduct more formal research to ascertain whether the introduction of humour into the workplace would provide more than just a good laugh from time to time. Would there be other benefits if sales jokes amongst the sales team were encouraged rather than being frowned upon?
A number of companies decided to take part in the research and to ensure measurability all had a large sales team promoting and marketing their products or services. The research company provided a number of sales jokes to each of the sales team and at the same time also gave a selected list of 6 other funny one-liners to the rest of the staff being administrative, managerial and also workshop staff where there was a large team maintaining the company's truck fleet.
Over a 4 week period productivity was measured from varying perspectives: improved management style, output of invoices, cash flow figures, sales targets, maintenance turnaround time in the workshop. In all areas - sales jokes, sports-related jokes, kiwi jokes and the like resulted in improved productivity. On the workshop floor, repairs to vehicles were completed faster so that they were back on the road and producing income for the company much quicker.
The administration area of the company produced and posted invoices much faster as well and as a result the company's cash flow also improved not just the bottom line profitability. The invoices went out punctually which meant average receipt times for bills were reduced from 60 days to 45 days.
The most significant impact was in the sales area of all companies. The sales jokes and increased laughter amongst the team created a sense of bonding and co-operation that had not existed previously. The team felt that telling sales jokes had lifted their spirits especially on days when they failed to obtain an appointment.
Their motivation was not diminished by this type of rejection because the sales jokes flying around the office kept them in a happy and positive frame of mind. In the sales team the introduction of the telling of a few good sales jokes through the week resulted in the team exceeding its sales targets for the first time in 18 months.
Everyone in the companies that took part in the research experienced better well-being, less sick day leave, their outlook on all fronts was much happier and positive Productivity improved as they were keen to perform their tasks in a timely manner and where sales were concerned reach their targets and more. The introduction of humour into the office environment delivered much more than a few good laughs.
