Salt, otherwise known as white gold', has become the unsung hero of our very existence, as camel trains still navigate the 700-kilometre journey, across the brutal Sahara Desert, to the Timbuktu salt mines.

Salt has become just one of the building blocks of civilization which we now take for granted, yet it is hotly debated as a health issue. Modern technology has made salt mundane and unbelievably inexpensive, even though it is formerly worth its weight in gold.

Numerous health consultants claim you should not add salt to anything you eat, while others say to use it in small quantities is beneficial for you.

Marinating food with salt enabled people to keep from starving, prior to canning and refrigeration. Our ancestors become skilled at preserving their food with salt and were able to use it through long and bitter winters, or hot bacteria-friendly summers. Curing and brining food helped sailors to live at sea for long stretches, leading to longer and longer trips and more exotic discoveries.

Salt, (NaCl) has been a major factor in numerous wars, establishing empires and the forming of trade routes. The Silk Road traversed one of the largest salt-producing regions on earth. Human innovation, intrigue and even violence, makes up the history of salt.

Taking away the oppression of the inequitable salt tax was the impetus for India's civil rights movement. Gandhi had selected salt to revive the support of the public for change. He asserted: "Next to air and water, salt is perhaps the greatest necessity of life."

For the adventurous traveler, the landscapes that create salt are eerily beautiful: from below-sea-level salt flats, high-altitude salt lakes, hypersaline coastal pans and deep crystal-encrusted caverns and mines, to the terraced salt pans of Peru.

Following the salt trail can make for a truly fascinating vacation, from the underground salt cathedral of Zipaquira, which seats 3000, forged out of a salt mountain, to the salt lakes of Argentina, America and Tunisia, or the Dead Sea in Israel, or joining a camel train in Africa.
