Salt or Sodium chloride is a very important mineral used by people all over the world. It is basically used in everything and anything from human and animal diet, food seasoning, food preservation, medicine and many others.

It is one of the necessities as well in keeping your pond healthy and the fishes in it happy. Pond salt is necessary since the sodium in it helps provide electrolytes in the water necessary for the health of the fishes in the pond. Pond salt helps to have healthy osmoregulation in fishes. Through osmosis, fishes can absorb most of the water they need. Now since pond salt provides one of the necessary minerals like sodium, this helps compensate for the ions that the fishes lost.

Remember, ponds always have low concentration of bad bacteria caused by gunk build-up usually because of excessive food droppings at the bottom or other debris collection below. These may lead to bacteria and virus infestation in the water. These bacteria build up will start up activities that may be bad for our fishes since their defenses might be attack and certain infections may happen to them. It is a very critical time for those keeping a pond since they may need to check regulary if the fishes are still getting the necessary care and electrolytes that they need to survive.

For freshwater fishes, a higher electrolyte level helps fluids to move freely on the fish's body and in turn induces the natural mucous coat on fish that will help them fend off parasites and bacterias that may weaken their bodies. It can also help fishes counter other health problems like the swelling of their cells, tissues or cavities because of excessive accumulation of watery fluid, bladder and intestinal problems and swelling of their intestinal tract due to excessive gas. Also, the salt increases the secretion of mucus by the goblet cells that would serve as a protection as well against cold temperature especialy come winter in your ponds.

Aside from killing parasites, fish pond salt can counter irritation as well caused by ammonia and nitrite through mucostimulation especially if the filters in your ponds are not functioning properly. Throught mucostimulation, the protective slime coating of fishes will increase. This chloride anion will then compete with the nitrite anion in entering the gills thus lessening the irritation among fishes.

Salt also act as a calming agent for fishes, like in the case of nitrite toxicity caused by overcrowoding and overfeeding of fishes. These nitrite ions when they enter the gills will keep good blood circulation thus leading to "methemoglobinemia" in fishes-- a condition where the blood can't carry necessary oxygen and deliver it to tissues throught the fish's body. Pond salt will for a time block harmful effects of nitrites and will keep your fish safe from toxicity.

From here we could safely conclude then that elevating the salinity in our pond water can be very stimulating for fishes since it would strengthen their physiology and strengthen their protection and immunity from the bacterias and parasites living with them in the pond. By elevating mucuos production, fish's sick days are numbered and you need not worry anymore about your pond. So next time you encounter a problem with your pond, always remember that a dash of salt is what you need!
