How to extract Salvorin A

How to extract Salvorin A

Extracting Salvorin A is easy. You can actually do it in your own kitchen. You need to have the right ingredients and materials:

Here is the step-by-step guide on extracting Salvorin A from Salvia divinorum:

1. In a large container, crush the leaves of the plant into smaller pieces. The smaller the leaves are broken, the lesser amount of acetone you will need for it. The most effective method to obtain smaller pieces easily is to freeze the leaves first. You have to take them inside the freezer for about 2 to 3 hours, just enough time to make them frozen-hard. Then, with a potato masher or a spoon, crush them until they reach the size of about 2 to 5 millimeters in diameter. However, this size can be hard to strain. Use a clean paper filter instead of a plastic strainer to get best result.

2. Pour chilled acetone to the crushed leaves. Chilled acetone is more effective for extraction than the normal ones. There are fewer Salvorin A left on the leaves when you use chilled acetone. The ratio would be 300 ml of acetone per 100 gram of leaves. All the crushed leaves must be submerged completely in acetone.

3. Set it aside for 5 minutes but, stir it every one minute lapse.

4. Pour the liquid mixture of the extracted leaves to another container, leaving the crushed leaves behind. Immediately place the mixture inside the freezer. This will prevent the rapid evaporation of the acetone.

5. Using another clean container with a coffee filter on top, pour the remaining extracted leaves. The coffee filter will effectively separate the small particles of the crushed leaves and the acetone mixture. Never use a plastic filter. It may cause reaction to the mixture.

6. Pour the liquid on a glass container. The glass container must be strong enough to resist breakage when they are used on heat or freezing temperature. The size of the container must also be able to accommodate all the liquid extracts.

7. Place it inside the freezer and let it stay overnight. Do not expose it to the sunlight, because Salvorin A is very volatile.

8. Prepare a pan of boiled water. Slowly immerse the glass of frozen Salvorin A extract. This is the evaporation process of the acetone. Never evaporate your acetone over a gas stove. This may cause fire accidents. Acetone is highly flammable. Do this in a well ventilated room to avoid suffocation.

9. Continue to let it evaporate until you reach only 10% of the original volume of the extract.

10. Transfer the remaining liquid in a small container. Evaporate it further, until it becomes solid.

11. The final product would be luminous dark green waxy residue. This product is loaded with Salvorin A. This is ready for purification process.

Following few steps in extracting Salvorin A is so easy. You just have to take note of the precautions to have a successful extraction.
