Sam & Max: Beyond the Alley of the Dolls
It is certainly not easy to make episodic adventure game
. Particularly not when you have a release schedule that includes episodes five in as many months. Therefore I am very impressed by Telltale Games has been given to this year's Sam & Max season. It feels because every episode imaginative and fresh, with lots of unique elements and themes, ensuring that they stand out and be remembered individually.
Left 4 Dogs?
Sam & Max: Beyond the Alley of the Dolls continue this trend. The episode starts chased our two friends into the stinky inhospitable restaurant by a gang of seemingly hypnotized Sam-clone (only wearing underpants, the original Sam's great annoyance).
It is of course only one thing to do when you are in town is invaded by zombie-like dogs, namely to barricade themselves as best you can and then shoot away at everything that moves outside.
After a while, however, our faithful detektivduo tired of shooting half-naked dogs. They decide instead to find out why this sudden resurgence of Sam-clones have taken place, and what they can do to stop the dog wandering beasts from taking over the world. This means of course a lot of good old-fashioned puzzle solving. The result is three or four hours with classic adventure gaming, just like Mom LucasArts used to make it.
Actually, mostly as before
Although Beyond the Alley of the Dolls feels both fresh and exciting, of course, the episode follows reasonably closely in the footsteps of the other games in the series. And if you have purchased season you know largely what you get.
Sam and Max must normally explore a series of communities in which they solve a number of more or less logical nuts to move forward. These solutions involve traditional to pick up anything not nailed down (a good old adventure game cliche), and use the things they've found the right place. But you also need to take advantage of the relatively new parapsychological properties of Max, which among other things, allows the furry little chap transform into objects he sees pictures or drive bay advanced treatment.
As usual nuts well-balanced and reasonably varied, and the times I was stuck for long periods, it was mostly because I had misunderstood or missed something essential and affordable obvious. I'm writing this about almost every single Sam & Max episode, but the nuts are never too difficult, but not so light that you do not feel a little nap when you solve them. Telltale knows his affairs, and is extremely consistent.
Another thing I write in every Sam & Max-review is that the humor works well. As usual, we get lots of amusing situations and lots of witty conversation with the many queer fish that inhabit the bizarre Sam & Max universe. Our two heroes have always a wisecrack in stock, whether it's about a description of something you click on or a twisted dialogue. Although most jokes are more "LOL" over "haha" ensure the continuing joke that none of the mood remains good and fun even when you get stuck and elsewhere had been tempted to switch.
t's all accompanied as usual by the wonderful and soothing music from the show's usual composer, Jared Emmerson-Johnson. Considering how many styles he has visited during the three Sam & Max seasons, it is difficult not to be impressed by the man. Otherwise, the presentation exactly as designed, colorful and cartoon-like environments and lots of fun animations.
Conclusion
Sometimes it's fine with predictability and Telltale Games has with its Sam & Max games proved predictability itself. Every month they deliver a fun and imaginative adventure that offers a good and solid entertainment for a night or two. But despite the predictability, it is the individual Sam & Max adventures have been fresh and exciting, and provided plenty of unique situations. Beyond the Alley of the Dolls fits, as expected, well into this series. This is a very pleasant episode featuring lots of good old fashioned adventure game fun.
