These services typically mean that the delivery will be completed within that much time after the initial call is placed with the courier. Therefore, as long as you request your service early enough in the day, there should be more than enough time for the courier to complete a same day delivery.

There are also services which can complete a delivery in the same day that offer service in a zone the size of the entire country. This is usually simply called same day courier service. This means that if you try to ship something with this option, the delivery should be finished before the end of that same day. This can usually only happen though if you place your request very early in the morning.

Another thing to think about when trying to do same day shipping are the other options which while not called "same day" can often get you that result. When looking at longer distances, NFO, or next flight out, can often get you a same day delivery result. Also, if you need the fastest delivery possible, you can always try emergency courier service as well, which may utilize vehicles like helicopters for the maximum speed possible.
