Sample Statistical Data Sets

Statistical data sets are collection of data which are maintained in an organized form

. The data is collected by sampling the observations in the experiment. This block of data is the basis for any statistical analysis which is analyzed with the help of statistical tools.

Statistical data sets can store as much information as required by the experiment. Huge statistical data sets are available for many areas to store large amount of data.

The experimenter should determine before what kind of information should be stored in the statistical data sets.

The thing that is common to all statistical data sets is that there is no restriction on the arrangement of the data. So there is a freedom for the researcher to organize the information in the data set in whatever way it is convenient.

The basic steps in the analysis are creating statistical data set, organizing data within the data set and interpretation of the interference from the data. Without the statistical data sets the entire task cannot be possible.

Statistical Formula for Data Sets

Some important formulae that might help to make inferences from the available data are

Mean: Mean is the ratio of the sum of the observations in the data set to the number of the items.

Mean = sum of observations/number of items

Median: Median is the middle term when the data is arranged in ascending or descending order.

Median = Middle Term (If number of term is odd)

Median = Average of two middle term (If number of term is even)

Mode: It is the term which occurs frequently in the data set

Range: It is difference between maximum value and minimum value.

Range = Maximum value Minimum value

Example: Find the mean, median, mode and range for the given set of data 3, 2, 2, 7, 8, 1, 5.

Solution:

Mean:

Number of data in set = 7.

Sum of all data = 28

Mean = 28/7 = 4

Median:

To find the median arrange the numbers in ascending order.

1, 2, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8

Hence the median is 3 since it is the middle term and also the numbers in data set is odd.

Mode:

Here mode is 2 as it occurs two times in the data set

Range:

Range = maximum value minimum value

= 8 1

= 7

Practice Problems on Statistical Data Sets

Practice 1: Find the mean, median, mode, and range for the data set: {25, 32, 20, 21, 47, 33, 25}.

Answer: Mean: 29, Median: 25, Mode: 25, Range: 27

Practice 2: Find the mean, median, mode, and range for the data set: {20, 27, 15, 16, 42, 28, 20}.

Answer: Mean: 24, Median: 20, Mode:20, Range: 27
