Samsung CLX-6240FX Toner Review by:Theodore Beach
The Samsung CLX-6240FX colour laser multifunction is a big machine which boasts a wide range of features
. With automatic duplex, an internal hard drive and a decent amount of memory, the Samsung CLX-6240FX multifunction printer is suitable for small offices. It can print quickly and offers good monochrome print quality, though colour graphics leave something to be desired.
The CLX-6240FX is not easy to miss. At 651mm this is a tall machine largely because of the configuration of the toner cartridges internally. Unfortunately, Samsung hasn't taken advantage of the additional height, setting the multifunction's highest input capability at 350 A4 pages. In case this isn't adequate, another 250-sheet cassette is obtainable.
The USB, Ethernet and RJ-11 fax ports are set at the side of the Samsung CLX-6240FX; connected cables stick out somewhat. A second USB port is set out in the front for you to directly print or scan documents from a flash drive.
One thing we are most worried about with this machine is its control panel The Samsung CLX-6240FX carries a variety of different buttons which include a fax keypad and speed dial options, copy settings and even a dedicated button for automatic dupex options. The panel could have been made easier by moving most of these options to the multifunction's on-screen menu, as it is often confusing most especially to first time users.
The Samsung CLX-6240FX is equipped with a 80GB internal hard drive which allows you to save jobs on the hard drive for future reprinting or security. These settings allow you to store the documents publicly or protect them with a password, as well as schedule a job to print at a designated time. Sadly, you can not scan to the hard drive or store an internal FTP or SMB/CIFS server.
The CLX-6240FX prints black and white and colour documents at a speed of 25ppm, a pretty decent result for its price. Of course, that is if you can bother waiting: the multifunction would seem to go to sleep or run a colour registration process at each and every chance, considerably prolonging print times. It can be frustrating to wait for each document to start printing.
Black and white results were fine with clear, readable charachters as small as 7-piont type. Documents appeared a bit grey on default settings, but can be easily fixed with the Samsung CLX-6240FX colour laser multifunction's Print ALL Text to Darken feature, which darkens the text without inconsistently bolding words or sentences. Colour printing isn't that good. The colours were, generall speaking, oversaturated, and there were some alignment issues between text and coloured backgrounds. The Fine Grain print option fixed the same issue on the CLX-6210FX, but this function is omitted on this machine. It is possible to manually adjust colour settings but it can be tricky without a reference.
It is possible to scan straight to a USB flash drive, networked computers, email and external servers. Scanned documents are of satisfactory quality, even though colours are normally under-saturated.
The main highlights of this Samsung colour laser multifunction is the monochrome print quality and the 80gb internal hard drive. On the other hand, design flaws and colour print quality issues hamper the Samsung CLX-6240FX. Consumables are a bit more expensive compared to alternatives such as the Konica Minolta Magicolor 4650DN. The

It will always be recommended to get the high yield versions ( black cartridge CLP-660B ) as these lower printing costs by a considerable margin. Compatible cartridges of good quality may even more minimize operating costs by over 30%.
The Samsung CLX-6240FX multifunction printer is certainly a huge improvement over cheaper models from the company, providing greater print quality and speed. Buts, some design flaws do remain especially the confusing control panel.
