Samsung Galaxy S - An Impressive All Rounder by:Chris Westley
Samsung has recently released what is arguably one of their most technologically advanced handsets to date
. The Samsung i9000 Galaxy S is as versatile as they come, thanks to the utilisation of the Android OS in conjunction with a 1 GHz processor and some other impressive hardware.
With its high levels of versatility and downloadable apps, this is a smartphone which is sure to appeal to just about everyone. With super fast web browsing, a 5 megapixel digital camera and a range of multimedia applications, it is a phone which offers something for everyone.
The handset measures 122.4x 64.2x 9.9mm, and weighs in at 119 g. This makes it very slimline and lightweight meaning it is easy to fit into a park or handbag and also very comfortable to hold and use on the move. An impressive 4 inch super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen is utilised for navigating the TouchWiz user interface and displaying photos and videos. The screen can display up to 16M colours within its pixel configuration of 480x 800 pixels providing great display quality making it perfect for viewing photos and videos.
In order to alert users to incoming calls and text messages, the Samsung Galaxy S utilises both vibration and ringing modes along with the added bonus of being able to assign MP3 and WAV music files as ringtones. A simple to use speakerphone system and a 3.5 mm audio jack provide options for handsfree communication on the go.
The handset comes with an internal phonebook which can store a huge amount of entries and has the Photocall feature standard. In order to store files such as music tracks and video clips, there is 8 GB or 16 GB of internal storage (depending on which model is purchased). Although ample, further storage can be attained thanks to a built in microSD card slot. Or simply installing a memory card of up to 32 GB, users can double or quadruple the available storage space.
Class 12 versions of both EDGE and GPRS provide the handset with its connections to cellular networks. In areas where 3G coverage is available, an HSDPA connection provides Internet access at speeds of up to 7.2 mega bytes per second (along with HSUPA at 5.76 mega bytes per second). Whenever local Wireless Networks are available, the handset utilises Wi-Fi connectivity to provide a faster and therefore enhanced browsing experience.
A handy 5 mega pixel digital camera does a great job of taking high quality still images thanks to its operating pixel resolution of 2592x 1944. A number of image enhancing features are included as standard such as Autofocus, touch focus face & smile detection. Thanks to GPS, geo-tagging is also included which automatically tags the location at which a photo was taken. The ability to shoot HD video footage in 720p (30 fps) adds to the versatility of the camera.
Access to the Android Market means users can pick and choose apps from many different categories meaning the sky's the limit in terms of versatility and customisation of the handset. This combination of versatile software and powerful hardware means the Samsung Galaxy S ticks all the boxes.
