San Diego Ca Hospitals How To Select The Best Hospitals

US News and World Report has ranked hospitals across the United States on a variety of factors

. Some factors are broad in nature, such as death rates, innovative equipment and patient questionnaires. These general rankings provide sufficient information for the majority of patients, since most injuries and illnesses are fairly regular.

US News also ranked hospitals in a variety of specialties. Some patients require procedures that are very specialized in nature. A hospital must perform enough procedures in these specialties, and do them well, to be ranking highly in that specialty. Of the 4,825 hospitals evaluated, only 140 performed well enough to rank in one or more specialties.

Here are the top nine hospitals in the San Diego area, according to US News and World Reports.

UC San Diego Medical Center in San Diego. This hospital has a total of fourteen specialties that are either nationally ranked or high performing, earning it the desirable Best Hospitals award from US News. Without a doubt a standout institution. Teaching hospitals like this one often rank well.

Scripps La Jolla Hospitals and Clinics in La Jolla. Also a Best Hospitals recipient, Scripps La Jolla is nationally ranked in one specialty, cardiology, and high performing in an additional eleven specialties. Eighty percent of its patients would suggest it, which far exceeds the national average of 69%.

Scripps Mercy Hospital SD. Scripps San Diego ranks a more than respectable ten high performing specialties. Their survival rates are better than projected in most specialties with a much better than expected ranking in Urology.

Sharp Memorial Hospital SD. Sharp Hospital in San Diego has an outstanding reputation with its patients, 84% of whom would recommend it to others. Three of its fourteen specialties have been ranked as high performing.

Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas. This is part of the prestigious Scripps Hospital group. Two of its eight specialties were rated as high performing. Check out the rankings for the specialties you need, however, since the survival rate for gynecology was much worse than expected.

Pomerado Hospital in Poway. This smaller hospital gets high marks for its performance in ear, nose and throat care.

Sharp Hospitals in Chula Vista, Coronado and SD. The top nine area hospitals are rounded out by these Sharps facilities in San Diego, Coronado and Chula Vista. Scripps in Chula Vista gets exceptionally high marks for keeping patients safe from accidents and medical errors.

For the vast majority of common problems, any of these hospitals would be an excellent choice. If you need a specialized procedure, check out which of these hospitals excels in that area. All of these ratings are for adult hospitals. Although all of these facilities see children, especially in the emergency room, a children's hospital is a better choice for young patients. Fortunately Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego is tops, with 10 nationally ranked specialties and a Best Hospitals rating.
