San Diego Sober Living Homes Are Not All Created Equally

There are many sober living homes here in San Diego County that claim to be safe for people recovering from addiction

. After many interviews with residents from various homes and tours of many different facilities, I have concluded that there is a tremendous need for quality sober living homes here in San Diego.

When a person leaves 30 day drug rehab it is imperitive that they are transitioned into a structured living enviornment which supports their recovery. Unfortunately, many of the sober houses that I have toured have been either co-ed or poorly managed. Most CADAC (California Drug and Alcohol Counselors) would agree that co-ed homes are a terrible choice for anyone fresh out of rehab. Imagine being newly sober and trying to live with the opposite sex in a house full of drug addicts. Now imagine a house manager that doesn't screen new residents beyond their ability to pay rent. It is obvious that although this may be a lucrative business, it is a prescription for disaster.

There are some homes which I have toured which take a very strong stance on having a zero tolerance policy which is critical to the effectiveness of a sober living home. Programs which require their residents to attend regular 12 step meetings have higher retention and success rates than homes that are loosely managed. Mandatory drug testing, at random, on a weekly basis is very important as well. However, many homes that are profit motive centered do not drug test at all. This is very dangerous because addiction is a fatal disease.

If you are looking for a sober living home here in San Diego be sure to ask these very important questons:

1. Is there weekly random drug testing?

2. Are there weekly required 12 step meetings?

3. Is there a firm Zero tolerance policy?

4. Has the program been running for at least a year?

5. Is the house full? ( An empty house indicates high relapse rates and the absence of community.)

6. Is the home a co-ed facility? ( This is a major warning sign, ask any drug counselor or addiction doctor about this point.)

7. Ask for at least 5 references from the families of past clients. Good programs have alumni that are grateful beyond words!
