San Francisco 49ers Tickets - Shakeup At Quarterback

As is the norm in the National Football League

, when a team is doing well, the quarterback gets much of the credit. Conversely, if the team is performing poorly, the quarterback shoulders much of the blame. The San Francisco 49ers aren't necessarily one of the worst-faring teams in the NFL with a 3-3 record after Week Seven, but they are also one of the most prominent teams going through a change at quarterback.

Coach Mike Singletary has announced that the team is benching current starting quarterback Shaun Hill in favor of Alex Smith. That comes in light of the Niners' game against the Houston Texans during Week Seven, which saw the Niners lose 24-21. Midway through that game, Singletary replaced Hill with Smith, yielding great results. During his time in the game, Hill was 6-of-11 for 45 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. Smith stepped in and went 15-of-22 for 209 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

The decision is a second chance for Smith, who was the Niners' first-round draft pick in 2005 as well as the first overall pick that year. Smith started the first year he joined the Niners until he was sidelined with a knee injury. He ended up playing in nine games, but he struggled and tallied a rating of only 40.8. He returned the next season to start every game and performed much better, finishing with a rating of 74.8. Hurting Smith's development was the revolving door of offensive coordinators in San Francisco, and the problems started to show in 2007. He dealt with injuries again, limiting his play to seven games. Injuries also kept him out of the entire 2008 season.

Shaun Hill won the starting position under new head coach Singletary prior to the start of the season, but his performance has been lacking in recent games. In six starts, he has tallied 943 yards, five touchdowns, two interceptions, 18 sacks, three fumbles and a passer rating of 79.6. Although Hill has been in the league since 2002, he played only one game before 2007. Fans can cheer on the team in this new era by getting San Francisco 49ers tickets.

The Niners' choice may be big news, but they aren't the only NFL team looking for changes in the position. Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher is staying a little more tight-lipped about what he will do, but many are expecting him to replace veteran Kerry Collins with Vince Young. The Titans have a surprising 0-6 record so far this season, a far cry from the 10-0 start they had under Collins last season. Young fell out of favor with fans, but the losing streak could be just the chance he needs. In addition, some sources are saying that the team's owner, Bud Adams, wants Young to start.

The Carolina Panthers may not be doing as badly as the Titans, but their 2-4 start has many anticipating quarterback Jake Delhomme seeing time on the bench. His performance so far this season has his quarterback rating nearly 30 points lower than it was last season (56.5 versus 84.7). Coach John Fox has been reluctant to remove Delhomme, but Matt Moore or A.J. Feeley could get a chance in the coming weeks.
