San Pedro De Alcantara - A Spanish Secret

On the sunny Costa del Sol, just outside Marbella

, lies the little Spanish town of San Pedro de Alcantara. Only 5 minutes from the cosmopolitan Puerto Banus and 10 minutes from Marbella, the town is ideally situated and has a bustling community.

As is typical of Spanish pueblos San Pedro is small, white and clean, with quiet parks and gardens. There is a long promenade along the beach which is very popular with the locals and with tourists.

Getting to and from San Pedro is easy with the N340 road running right past it. When the new road layout is complete there will be a tunnel under the town to reduce congestion in the center. There is a good bus service with many stops in the town. Gibraltar airport is 40 minutes away with Malaga airport 40 minutes in the other direction.

Shopping in San Pedro is good. Every Thursday morning there is a large street market selling fresh fruit and vegetables, clothes and souvenirs. There is quite a good size town center in San Pedro which focuses on a central square plaza. Shopping can be found down the many side streets and along the main pedestrianised area of the town.

San Pedro Plaza is surrounded by restaurants and bars and is also a meeting point. In October San Pedro Feria also centers around the plaza with fresh food and drink served along with street entertainment. You will find every type of restaurant in San Pedro from burger joints to an Argentinian steakhouse and cuisine from around the world. Eating out is very popular in San Pedro. Its a little quieter than some of the coasts other towns and is not known for its nightspots a short taxi drive and youre in Puerto Banus.

San Pedro beach is 2km of mostly sand, but there is a small line of pebbles close to the shore. The beach is popular with sunbathers, swimmers, kite-surfers and families. Many restaurants and beach bars chiringuitos line the promenade allowing beach lovers to spend the whole day there. Recently some exercise machines were installed on the promenade and these are proving to be very popular.

San Pedro is one of the best places on the coast for sports fans. There is a sport centre where you can enjoy football, volleyball, tennis, aerobics, gym, swimming and more! There is also the Club de Padel y Tenis in Nueva Alcantara which is very popular for tennis and padel. The club is famous for hosting international tournaments as well as offering coaching for all ages. Also, in Guadalmina, is the Cable Ski Marbella a wire driven water-skiing lake very popular with the youngsters.

Of course, you couldnt visit any town on the coast without being close to a golf course or two. San Pedro is no exception with the beautiful Guadalmina Golf Club two 18 hole golf courses and a par 3 nine hole golf course, a covered driving range for 40 players and a chipping and putting green. There is also a driving range in Guadalmina, located at the entrance to the Cable Ski.

I have lived in San Pedro for a few years and I love it. You are never far from a supermarket, bars and restaurants and other facilities. Banks are plentiful, buses are regular and the scenery is beautiful and clean. If you want a real Spanish lifestyle then San Pedro de Alcantara is the place to be!
