Santa Maria - Brake And Lamp Inspection
Did you use the insurance money you received to fix your vehicle
, or did you ignore the repairs and use the money for something else? One thing you need to be aware of is that often times, after an auto accident, the vehicles title actually becomes a salvage. The state of California has strict rules for re-registering vehicles with salvaged titles. So what does this mean for you? Well, the next time your vehicle is due for registration, you may be required to complete a whole laundry list of tasks before you are legally permitted to drive your car or truck again on California roadways.
One of the most important tasks on that list is the California Brake and Lamp Inspection. This is an extremely in depth examination of the vehicles brake system and exterior lighting system. These inspections can be required by the Department of Motor Vehicles or the California Highway Patrol if a vehicle has sustained damage due to an auto accident or vehicle theft. If a vehicle has been damaged as a result of one of the above situations, it may not be visible without a thorough assessment by a trained inspector. California Brake and Lamp Tests can only be performed by state certified technicians.
Brake and Light Inspections take approximately 2 hours to complete as the inspector will record a number of observations and precise measurements using specialized test equipment. During the brake inspection, the technician will pull all wheels and check for any outstanding issues with the brake hydraulic system, installation and functionality of all applicable hardware, and warning lights. The emergency brake is also required to hold the vehicle on a 6 percent grade. The brake system will also need to be responsive enough to stop the vehicle in less than 20 feet while traveling at 25 mph.
The exterior lighting system which includes the headlights accounts for the second half of the inspection. One important note not often considered by most consumers is that the vehicle is required to have tires with matching sizes on the axles. This is necessary for the vehicle to sit level so the headlights can be accurately measured and adjusted. Prior to bringing a salvaged vehicle to a shop, its a good idea to perform your own pre-inspection of all external lights and lenses. Make sure there are no cracks in any of the lenses which would allow white light to shine through. Its also important to verify that all glass and plastic lenses are clear and not cloudy so there are no visibility issues when any of the lights are illuminated.
Following the inspection, the technician will notify the customer of any needed repairs in order to complete the certification process. After all necessary repairs have been performed, and the inspector has deemed the vehicle safe and roadworthy, a brake certificate and a lamp certificate will be issued which can be presented to the DMV in order for the vehicle to be registered.
