Santander offers world cup fans 'the chance to avoid charges'

Santander has urged England fans travelling to the World Cup to take out its specialist zero current account.

Santander is today (May 25th) urging England fans travelling to South Africa for the World Cup to avoid inflated financial fees while they are away.

Thousands of Brits will be flocking to the southern hemisphere in the next two to three weeks ahead of England's opening game of the tournament against the United States in Rustenburg on June 12th.

Due to South African law, tourists are only able to take 5,000 rand - around 450 - into the country with them in cash, meaning that most fans will be forced to raid their current account or savings accounts while they are away.

With touring England fans expected to spend an average of around 2,700 each during their trip, credit card and cash machine charges on purchases and withdrawals will soon add up. Estimates suggest that collectively supporters will outlay around 135 million over the course of the competition in their support of Fabio Capello's team.

Research from Santander has found that nearly half - 47 per cent - of travellers from the UK withdraw three-quarters of their spending money from cash machines while they are away, thereby incurring standard charges for foreign exchange of around 2.75 per cent and a cash handling fee of 1.5 per cent.

Taking the estimated figure of 2,700 each England fan will spend in South Africa, this would mean that every supporter would pay around 86 in unnecessary charges during their time attending the tournament.

Therefore, Santander says that fans should consider opening its zero current account package prior to leaving the UK, as this offers no fees for customers withdrawing cash or spending on their debit card anywhere in the world. This account is available to new and existing mortgage customers who have their main current account with the bank or who wish to switch.
