Santiago is numbered among the best cities in Spain and is especially famous because of the religious value it holds

. It is home to the Way of Saint James which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city's name actually comes from the belief that the apostle Saint James is buried here.

The city has splendid pieces of architecture and is considered to have the best seafood cuisine in the country. This is indeed a wonderful place to visit on your tour of Spain.

There are also some areas you should stay away from. Do not forget to go to a tourist center when you arrive in Santiago. They will let you know what areas are safe for tourist and what areas to avoid. These places change from time to time, so your tourist center guide should be able to educate you properly.

The legal age for drinking and gambling in Dominican Republic is 18 years. Though you may find locals who are below 18 years involved in drinking and gambling, do not encourage yourself if you are below 18 years or someone else with you who is below 18 years to follow them. If you are caught, you will pay heavily. Some clubs, restaurants and bars stay open all night.


There are a number of taverns, restaurants and bars in Santiago and they cater food at prices that suit various budgets. Popular regional products are fish, beef and seafood. If you are interested in meat items, you can get them in the city outskirts wherein you can get chorizo sausage, flame-grilled meats, barbecued steaks and T-bone steaks.

This is no seedy, red-light district phenomenon, Cafes con Pena's are all over Santiago, especially in downtown area, they are as ubiquitous in Santiago as Starbucks is in any city of the United States.

A good recommendation would be to take a walk through "Ahumada" walking street, you will find some cafes, especially inside of "gallerias"; dark dead end commercial alleys, where you have high chances to find those cafes where ladies shows a little more than the legs, know as "millionaire minute"


Besides the important and unique Festival of the Caribbean (Festival del Caribe), always held on the first week of July, there are other remarkable cultural activities such as the Aquatic Carnival (Carnaval Acuatico) and the so famous Santiago Carnivals (Carnavales Santiagueros). This popular celebration is included within the three most ancient cultural events of the island. Particularly, the "Conga santiaguera" is an unforgettable show, either when it bustles along Trocha street or Enramada street. In Santiago, you can visit the Museum of the Carnival, featuring the history and most fascinating objects of these celebrations.
