Santiago de Compostela

It is an important historic city and is considered to be a world heritage site

. The cathedral here called the Santiago cathedral is a renowned pilgrimage place and people from different parts of the world come here. Other than being a holy pilgrimage place, the city is also famous for its university consisting of nearly 33,000 students which give the city a whole different look. Large number of restaurants and bars are present; night here is very colorful and decorated.

The city has beautiful climate with many gardens and surrounding mountains which give the place a beautiful look.

Santiago de Compostela


It is the famous cathedral of Santiago and is a well known pilgrimage centre. The architecture of this place is beautiful giving glimpses of the Romanesque brilliance. The cathedral was built on the ruins of the temple and was constructed around 1075. With time it has experienced many renovations and the different cultures that have passed have left a mark upon this place. Traces of Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Neoclassical and Plateresque cultures can be seen here.

Colegiata de Santa Mara la Real de Sar

It is a church that was built in the 12th century. It is a fine example of Romanesque architecture. A tower can be seen outside the church. Some parts of the church are beautifully laid like the capitals in the cloister of the church.

Santiago de Compostela Cathedral Museum

It is a well known museum of Santiago consisting of important archaeological specimens of the pre-historic time. The museum is divided into various rooms. There are sculptures, beautiful paintings, furniture, rugs and tapestries along with beautiful metalwork. There is also a library present that contains a large collection of books, some of which are historically and culturally important and are priceless like the Liber Sancti Jacobi and the La Historia Compostelana. Various unique and historically important documents are also stored here.

Galician Contemporary Art Centre

It is a regional museum of modern art. Beautiful artistic works of Portuguese architects are stored here. Other than these many pieces of modern art can also be found here.

Convento de Santo Domingo de Bonaval

It is a convent and its history dates back to the 13th century. It is considered as a national monument. The church contained inside this convent is the biggest of all the churches in Santiago. The architecture of the structure is a mixture of Gothic, Baroque and Romanesque style. The convent also contains a museum which is called the Museum of the Galician People. The museum gives a glimpse of the Galician culture.

Other than this, the convent also contains the tomb of Rosalia de Castro who was a well known novelist.
