Sarasota's Urfer Family Park "Greens Up"!
Sarasota lifestyle welcomes Urfer Family Park, a "green" park filled with surprises.
Finally, families in east Sarasota have a part to call their own.
Located at the corner of Honore and Bee Ridge, Urfer Family Park (4000 Honore Ave., Sarasota) combines playgrounds, covered picnic areas, paved fitness trail & nature trails through scrub palmettos.
Once home to cattle, Sarasota's newest 55-acre Urfer Family Park highlights conservation.
As Sarasota County's first Silver LEED certified park, Urfer Family Park represents a new milestone in sustainability. Water conservation will be achieved utilizing a dual approach:
1. First, the goal is to reduce irrigation demand by the careful selection of native and drought tolerant plant materials, along with low-flow irrigation devices. The design and construction selected native landscape materials that are compatible with the smaller eco-systems on the project site, enhancing the project goals to conserve the original wildlife sanctuaries and natural environment of the park. The reduction in irrigation demand due to these strategies is expected to exceed 50%. Awesome!
2. The second approach to water conservation is through the use of very low-flow plumbing devices, such as dual flush water closets and low flow shower heads. The expected reduction in water use through these devices is 30%. Great news!
The playground alone keeps kids occupied for hours. Indeed, parents, au pairs & grandparents appreciate any opportunity for kids to burn energy.
On weekends, the park enjoys crowds and at least one birthday party. No problem though. Urfer is big enough to keep everyone happy.
One of the more unique characteristics of Urfer Park is the soon-to-be rehabilitated C. B. Wilson House, a historic structure constructed circa 1917. When renovated, it will be open to the public, providing space to the community for public meetings and functions. The second floor will house offices for the Friends of Sarasota County Parks and for Sarasota County Park staff.
Urfer joins Rothenbach Park, another newer family-friendly park located just a few miles east on Bee Ridge. Rothenbach Park, with its smaller playground but LOTS of wildlife from deer to possum to raccoons to snakes to birds and alligators, adds two wonderful paved trails. The bigger trail (2.75 miles) winds among canopied trees and over creeks, luring cyclists, joggers, roller-bladers, walkers & strollers. The other smaller 1 mile paved trail, exposed to full blazing sun is best early morning or late afternoon.
Urfer also appeals to serious radio-controlled flying "aces." These are not your Wal-Mart toys either. These hobbyists enjoy their own space atop Urfer, buzzing around for hours.
Sarasota real estate is easier to sell when buyers confirm good schools, parks & shopping. Together, Urfer Family Park and Rothenbach Park provide family-friendly recreation in East Sarasota. When visiting Rothenbach Park, note the gate is locked at 8 PM during the summer. Though lots of light left at 8 PM, Sarasota County has chosen to lock it up, whether or not you're still on the trail. Not to worry, you can call the security people & wait on them to unlock the gate. Please don't ask how I know about this.
