Sasanaransi Buddhist Temple A Cultural Landmark In Singapore

The relatively small land area of Singapore has developed during the past few decades

at an unbelievably high rate to become the business and social hub of the world. All global networks converge at Singapore creating a dense nucleus in this world class Asian city. The steel grey skyscrapers and towering office buildings create an impressive skyline along with the many cinemas, theme parks, shopping malls and hotels reserved for leisure. A cleaner and livelier country one is unlikely to come across.

Many see Singapore as only a place for business and commercial activities or for visiting some of the world's best theme parks or shopping malls, but few see the hidden treasures and the cultural and natural diversity of the nation.

The Sasanaransi Temple at no.14 Tai gin road, Singapore is one such forgotten gem that reflects the rich cultural heritage and the influence the neighbouring countries had on the city's development over time. Burma has had a close relationship with Singapore and a Buddhist expatriate of Burma built the temple of Sasanaransi for the benefit of Burmese Buddhists abroad. The original temple was off Serangoon road Little India and was later moved in 1991 to the current location in response to the appeal made by the Housing Development Board.

The Sasanaransi temple boasts a 3.3m high Buddha statue of pure marble. It is said that the Buddhist expatriate and his friend, an herbal doctor, travelled to Burma, their homeland and brought back a 3.3m marble block from which the Buddha statue was carved. The temple also houses a golden standing Buddha image and tells the story of the Buddha's life through relics and murals. It offers a unique insight into the cultural traditions and beliefs of Buddhists and provides a fascinating contrast to the more modern attractions that the city is known for.
