Satellite navigation is something that was really rare ten years ago, but nowadays most of us would struggle to make a journey without it. Gone are the days we printed off Google maps and read the instructions, favouring the familiar voice to shout out directions for us. Your little sat nav unit is a receiver linked to a network of satellites orbiting the Earth. The satellites help the receiver to pinpoint its precise position on the surface of the Earth, to within a few metres. Add maps and some computer technology, and your sat nav can guide you anywhere you want to go.

But how safe are the systems? A survey carried out recently surveyed two thousand drivers and found that nineteen percent reported a loss in concentration due to the GPS when driving. One in ten drivers has guiltily admitted that they programme their systems when on the move as opposed to programming the route in beforehand. This of course takes the eye off the road, and causes a lapse in concentration.

One in eight drivers doesn't check the route in advance as a backup, which is a really bad idea if you are driving in an unknown area. Satellite systems rely on contact with the satellites, so if the weather is particularly bad and the signal is lost, then the route will get stuck on the screen. This means that you won't know where you are and it's often difficult to catch up.

One in four drivers admitted to reading maps while they are operating a vehicle, and although this is seen to be less distracting that a machine, it is still worrying and dangerous.
