Satellite Internet Helps Activists Across The World Create Political Change

In the past, being a political activist didn't have to take a lot of preparation work

. People could simply take the time to research the issues they cared about and then show up to political protests. Since protests were so new, they were an incredibly powerful way to have people's political voices heard, but it's become more clear that in recent years protests aren't able to do much to change the political current. Politicians generally seem to ignore protestors, and the American public seems to think that protestors shouldn't be taken seriously. So various groups of people have been looking for new ways to bring attention to the issues they care about, and as the technology industry has grown and redefined the way Americans interact with one another, that has given groups new outlets through which they can publicize their messages. These days, people are realizing that satellite internet is the most important resource they can use to create political change.

Political change all starts with educating people about various facts and issues in order to gain enough support around a specific cause. Even though many politicians speak about creating change, including President Obama, most change happens because of people outside of the bureaucratic political system. Political activists, who take on all kinds of different issues, are really responsible for the majority of the biggest changes that have taken place in United States history. Abolishing slavery, the women's suffrage movement, free public education, labor laws and establishing civil rights all began to become important to Americans thanks to political activists who were brave enough to challenge what was accepted as normal at the time. Unfortunately, the methods of change that activists used in the past are no longer viable today, but current activists are finding ways to use new technologies for their causes.

Although some activists still lead political protests and marches, the majority of activists put their efforts towards educating the public and gathering support with various technologies such as film and wireless internet to raise awareness around issues they care about. For example, just last year, a group of people who were concerned about dolphins and whales that are captured and killed in Japan created a documentary about the issue. The activists wanted to get video footage of a cove where tens of thousands dolphins are driven to every year and then slaughtered by Japanese fishermen, but the community where the dolphin hunt takes place every year prohibited visitors from watching or videoing the area. Since the activists were not allowed to see what was happening, they snuck into the cove and placed hidden cameras there to capture video footage. Those cameras were attached to their computers by satellite internet connections so they were able to view the footage quickly whether or not they would be able to retrieve their cameras. Their film, The Cove, went on to win the 2009 Academy Award for Best Documentary and to bring the issue to millions of people all over the world. Many people are now using their satellite internet access to go online to find out how they can get involved with the issue. After the documentary was released, political pressure forced the tiny Japanese town to suspend dolphin hunts. This is just one example out of many, but activists are clearly finding that using new technologies such as satellite internet can help them create the political change they care so much about.
