Speed can average around 500 kbps for downloads and 400 kbps for uploads, but may seem slower due to satellite internet delay. Another type of drawback that satellite internet shares with cable internet are the limitations placed on the amount of data transferred in a given period. ISPs have thresholds for both uploads and downloads that when exceeded by users will reduce their speeds as a means to balance the congestion and ensure optimum internet performance. However, thresholds for satellite internet tend to be much lower than traditional cable internet (around 200 and 500 megabytes per day).

The downsides to satellite internet issues are not so much negatives when considering that all other internet connections suffer from the same disadvantages. These instances are bound to occur depending on the chosen internet plans or service and internet usage. A simple matter of upgrading your internet plan can increase speeds significantly. But despite threshold limitations and occasional lag, the advantages of high-speed internet as it pertains to necessity over dial-up are much more desirable. Dial-up internet is more prone to disconnections and the cost for its service on top of the monthly phone bill can make it an expensive option.
