Living in an area where you can' t get DSL or cable internet makes you very appreciative of satellite internet since it's such an upgrade over dial up. This is one place where we can say, advantage - satellite internet.

If you enjoy watching YouTube videos online, sharing pictures back and forth with friends and family, and shopping online you know that these are virtually impossible on a dial up service. So this is another advantage for a satellite internet system.

Many satellite internet reviews discuss the disadvantages that come into play when you compare internet by satellite to cable or DSL. Because even though it's sometimes referred to as broadband satellite, the speeds are far slower than regular broadband internet.

Even if not compared, there are at least several distinct disadvantages. The disadvantages mainly relate to how much data can be downloaded and the speed of downloading. As you have probably guessed, both of these have limits imposed.

Satellite internet users face what is referred to as a Fair Access Policy. This refers to how much data users can download in a 24 hour period. Exceed this limit and your internet becomes as slow as dial up for a specified period of time. (However most satellite internet plans have a period of time, usually in the middle of the night when you will not be subject to the FAP.)

You may find that during peak times of use, the downloading speed slows down. It then increases in speed during times when fewer users are accessing the service. There is no real way to guarantee how fast your speed of downloading will really be. That's not a whole lot different from a regular broadband service. This type of internet also has reduced speeds during peak hours.

The weather does affect a satellite internet system. Poor weather conditions, especially heavy rain or snow, can cause an interruption in service or even a loss of connectivity on a temporary basis. There is nothing you can really do when this happens. One thing to take note of; if it snows enough to cover even part of your dish, you will have to clean off the snow to restore service.

You can also count cost as being a disadvantage. When you compare internet via satellite to other types of internet, it costs more, especially when it comes to monthly service fees. You can usually get installation done at no cost as a sign up bonus. Your cost per month will be directly affected by the size of the data plan you go with and the download speed you opt for.

Even though satellite internet reviews tend to focus more on the disadvantages, it's important to look at the advantages as well. Because if you are stuck with dial up, the advantages definitely outweigh the disadvantages.
