With a satellite service you can stay connected with your job in the city, while completing tasks at home. This wouldn't be possible with dial-up. But with satellite you can send and receive large files, even those with large graphics attached, do online conferences, and generally work alongside colleagues as if you were right there.

You'll quickly discover that the speed of downloading is slower than DSL or cable, but fast enough to download podcasts and music, or watch videos. But for satellite internet reviews to be realistic, they should include the not so wonderful part as well. There are two main drawbacks to internet via satellite. These drawbacks are weather and higher cost compared to other kinds of internet.

Satellite internet can be adversely affected by the weather. If you subscribe to a satellite TV service package, you are no doubt aware of how severe weather can interrupt the signal. Satellite internet can also be interrupted by severe weather. You may find that the speed significantly slows down, or may even be interrupted temporarily during a severe rainstorm.

You can't do anything about this, either. The satellite is up in the sky and it can't help being affected by weather passing in front of it.

Snow also affects the service. If your dish becomes snow covered, signal transmission grinds to a halt. To start it up again, brush off the dish. Or, if you have a lot of patience you can wait for the snow to melt.

Cost is the other drawback to satellite internet. There are many reasonably priced packages available for regular broadband internet. Many of these packages also allow almost unlimited amounts of data to be downloaded.

Internet using satellite is a lot more expensive. You will also be limited in the amount of megabytes you will be able to download each day. Bigger packages are available but you will pay more for them.
