Satellite Tv Provides Quality Entertainment for Women
Television programming today has expanded greatly. Because there are literally hundreds of channels to choose from, the ability to entertain specific demographics of people has become much more effective. Now there are specialized channels that aim for specific peer groups of people, to provide them with everything from entertainment to how-tos that are relevant to their own life experiences. This is one of the most significant changes in television today. It has changed and grown so much that now everyone has a channel that speaks to them. From Logo aimed at GLBTQ viewers to Univision aimed at Latinos.
The real America is now better represented in today's media with satellite tv. That's a reason for everyone to celebrate. One of the demographical groups that are getting a lot of visibility on satellite tv more recently are women. There have been a number of channels that were created by and for women in the last few years. These channels were created to branch off of"mainstream programming that is typically geared at the middle class American man and teenagers, to open up the entertainment industry for women in a positive way.
The first channel to target this demographic this was Lifetime. The channel was created in 1984 with the slogan "Lifetime: Television for Women" up until 2005, and then the image was updated and the station got a new look with the line "My Story is On Lifetime." The channel clearly seeks to provide content geared at women. Lifetime attempts to cast women in leading roles in their original films and also plays a lot of movies that deal with issues related to women, both positive and negative stories. Overall, it is a place where women are positively represented. It is a channel that has constantly evolved to stay in touch with the kind of entertainment that modern women want. The channel was so successful that it gave way to a spin off channel dedicated solely to Lifetime movies. This channel, The Lifetime Movie Network, has been very successful. You can find both of these channels on satellite tv.
Two other networks that have more recently been created by and for women are the Oxygen Network and WE: Women's Entertainment Television. Both of these satellite tv channels were created with the same idea of Lifetime, to provide informative, engaging and entertaining content geared towards women. The Oxygen Network was created in part by Oprah Winfrey in 2000. Instead of original drama films being it's focus and draw like Lifetime, Oxygen seeks to create more interactive and comedic programming. The channel has a lot of female centered talk-shows, probably influenced by Oprah, like The Tyra Banks Show and Talk Sex with Sue Johanson. It also has a lot of innovative comedy shows like the famous reality-twisted Girls Behaving Badly comedy troupe and the viral shorts of Campus Ladies. The latter, WE: Women's Entertainment, now coined as "WeTV," created in 1997 is more of a mix between Lifetime and Oxygen, as it offers original tv movies and dramas as well as nonfiction talk shows. All of their programming is also made with women in mind.
