Pointe Shoes

Pointe Shoes are not usually worn by beginners and are sported by more advanced ballerinas. They provide the strength and support to the ankle and feet which allows dancers to dance en pointe i.e. on their 'tip-toes' and are designed to give the dancer a feeling of weightlessness. However, if you are at the stage where you feel ready - and you teacher agrees with this - to dance en pointe then you need to be very careful when purchasing your first pair of pointe shoes.

There are many varieties out there on the market and choosing the wrong ones can affect your ability to dance en pointe. It may be wise to sit down with your teacher first and have a chat about which shoes to buy. Find out which fabrics and colours your teacher or company prefers. Be sure to test the shoes both in flat feet and en pointe. Be sure to remember though, dancing en pointe is not advisable for beginners as it requires a great deal of ankle and foot strength which you may not yet have, as well as the necessary experience.
