Sauna Benefits

Saunas are a common sight in fitness facilities

, spas, wellness centers and even in many personal homes. The popularity of the sauna revolves largely around the many benefits that can be obtained through spending time inside the sauna.

Sauna benefits are associated largely with the effects the dry heat of the sauna has on the body. A dry sauna's temperature can get as high as 185 degrees Fahrenheit, which can bring the external skin temperature of your body up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit in only a few minutes. As the skin heats up, the body naturally starts taking measures to cool the body back down. This include dilating blood vessels to pull warm blood towards the surface of the skin in order to lower the temperature. As the blood vessels dilate, the circulation of blood is improved throughout the body, including to your hands and feet. The body also responds by causing the production of sweat. The loss of sweat explains weight loss benefits associated with saunas. However, the results are only temporary as the weight returns once your body rehydrates.

Relaxed muscles can also be counted among sauna benefits. The increased heat and dilation of blood vessels helps encourage tight muscles to loosen up, resulting in the calm and relaxed state felt both in the sauna, and in the hours after spending time in a sauna.

For wet saunas, more commonly referred to as steam rooms, additional benefits can include temporary relief from respiratory issues, such as nasal congestion. Benefits are similar to those obtained from a humidifier.

Along with the benefits of a sauna, it's important to keep in mind the potential dangers if not used appropriately. Saunas should not be used by those with abnormal heart rhythms, high blood pressure, angina or heart diseases. Those with concerns should talk to their doctor before getting in a sauna. When using the sauna, sessions should be limited to less than 15 minutes at a time. Users should drink plenty of water both before using the sauna, as well as after getting out to prevent dehydration. If feelings of dizziness or sickness occur, users should exit the sauna immediately.
