Known to explorers such as Vasco da Gama as early as the fifteenth century, Cape Town started off as a supply depot for the Dutch East India Company in the seventeenth century and became the first permanent European settlement in South Africa. Changing hands numerous times during the Napoleonic wars it was eventually ceded to the British in the Anglo-Dutch treaty of 1814. Cape Town was made the legislative capital of the Union of South Africa in 1910 and then the Republic of South Africa when South Africa was granted independence from the UK in 1931. It's one of three capitals in South Africa; Cape Town (Legislative), Pretoria (Executive) & Bloemfontein (Judicial)

##Like a lot of people I tend to think of Africa as being uniformly hot. What's the climate like in Cape Town?

In reality Cape Town's climate is quite temperate. During the summer months (that is to say January to March) the average temperatures tend to be between 15 and 26 degrees Celsius. The South African summers are rather dry with over 60% of annual precipitation falling between May and August. It's worth noting that Cape Town lies farther south of the equator than every major Canadian cities lie to the North.

## How easy is it to get there?

Cape Town International Airport is Africa's third busiest with many international routes linking it to many major cities including London (Heathrow), Amsterdam, Istanbul, Buenos Aires and Singapore to name but a few. It's also a major cruise ship destination.

Well, being a major tourist destination, Cape Town has a broad variety of options from which to select.
