Research
If you're going somewhere that's very popular with tourists, then the chances are that there will there will be a tourist board website for your chosen destination. While you may find many sites that claim to be real, look for the official site of your holiday country, which will mention that country's government. These sites are often full of informative videos of where to go during your time in the country, kept up to date with the most recent news, and even competitions, such as winning free passes to famous attractions, or free meals at top restaurants.
Subscribe
Find out which newspapers and magazine are the most popular in your chosen destination and subscribe to them if possible. While some papers may deliver overseas, many others won't, so make use of your email address and subscribe to a daily or weekly update if they provide them. This will let you know what's happening in the area, such as gigs, shows and festivals that are being organised, and the dates of important events and holidays. As with official tourist sites, these papers will often run competitions to win great prizes, but just make sure that they are open to non-nationals. These papers often provide reviews of local sites and hotspots, so you can read the reviews of where you want to go before you travel, which could stop you from being disappointed at the last minute.
