Save On Home Lighting Costs
We are constantly being bombarded with messages about saving energy in the home
. While much of what we hear is worthwhile information, most people will be trying to keep their costs down anyway. You can save on home lighting costs without having to give up the amount of light that you prefer in your home.
Try fitting some of the long life bulbs that are on the market now. No longer are these bulbs the ugly things they were when they first appeared in our stores. Nowadays you can get long life bulbs in different shapes and sizes to go with your rooms and to suit your personal taste.
Long life bulbs are quite a bit more expensive than the older light bulbs but they can often last at least five times as long, and they usually are cheaper now than when they first started to appear in the stores. You can get long life bulbs in different wattages, just like the older type, so there should be no problem in getting what you want.
One time honored way of saving money on your home lighting is to use lower watt bulbs in places like the entrance hall and the downstairs cloakroom. You don't spend most of your time in either the hallway or the cloakroom so you shouldn't need a bright light. Instead of using hundred watt bulbs in some areas of your home, try using a sixty watt bulb. Not only will you save money by using bulbs with a lower watt in some areas of your home, you'll also be reducing your carbon footprint a bit.
When you choose lighting systems that are energy efficient you not only save money, you are doing your bit to help the environment. Lighting is the most used form of energy in the home and energy efficient methods such as long life bulbs or halogen lights will reduce your energy use. Other than night lights in a child's room, don't leave lights on over night. If you go out in the evening just leave one light on, you don't need to floodlight the whole house to warn potential burglars away, one is usually sufficient.
If you are using wall lights in your living room then try turning off the floor lamp or use the floor lamp rather than the wall lights or overhead lights. Just because you have different lighting fixtures in a room doesn't mean to say that you need to have them all switched on at once.
Make the most of the natural light in your home by choosing light colored wall and floor coverings, use natural light sources for as long as possible before you start switching on the lamps. Light colors in a room give the effect of making the daylight last that little bit longer so try and avoid too many dark colors where possible.
When you decide to be energy efficient in your home, you are saving money, reducing the country's energy load and sending out fewer emissions, so cutting back on pollution. Being efficient with your lighting doesn't mean that you have to live in the dark; it just means spending a little time thinking about how you use lighting and what is the most efficient way of doing it.
