First, you must attract Attention. Without getting noticed, no one will buy your products or services.

Second, your message must create Interest. After you get there attention, so what? Here the idea is to leverage the concept of "What's In It for Me?" (WIIFM).

Third, is to develop the Desire. This is the time to hit the emotional hot buttons. Remember no one likes to be sold, but must everyone loves to buy.

Finally, a call to Action needs to be present. Now that you have them attracted, interested and desirous, this is the perfect opportunity to have them take action.

Use this model as a barometer when being approached by those folks or businesses that say they can increase your sales through their marketing expertise. If their messages do not:

Secret #2 - Ask

If you are approached by a marketing service, then ask for the names of at least 3 of their customers. Tell them you wish to speak with their clients about the overall services and most importantly the delivered results. Additionally, ask other business colleagues about this firm's reputation. Take time to do your "asking research." Do not forget to Google them, check the executives out through social media such as LinkedIn as well as business directories. From my experience and those of my clients, well over 50% of marketing experts are totally clueless about how to attract attention through exceptional copy writing. Many of these folks believe that graphics will sell and live with the attitude of build it and they will come.

Secret #3 - Alexa.com

Given the Internet is becoming a prime vehicle for marketing efforts, many firms talk about how they can deliver you outstanding traffic. Yet, when their own website is checked out, you may find that your site actually gets more traffic than theirs. By going to Alexa.com you can enter in any URL and determine how that business ranks within all traffic on the Internet. Additionally, you have the opportunity to download a tool bar that will give you the traffic ranking on every website you visit. When a site has "No rank" and advertises their SEO expertise, be very careful before you commit hundreds if not thousands of marketing dollars.

These three (3) secrets can help turn your dollars from being spent to being invested. After all, the goal for those dollars is to increase sales and not to make the marketing firm rich at your expense.
