If there is one thing that has increased in price dramatically over the last year it has been the price of oil

. We have gotten to the point where we are paying almost $5 a gallon. If the prices go up anymore people will have to take out a loan on their home to afford to get to work everyday. Some our predicting that we could reach $6 a gallon this year and if you are like me you can afford to fill up every week. You could possibly be spending over $500 a month just on gas and with prices for food and other things also going up, it is going to be even more difficult to survive. Even thought the price for gas may be going up there are ways you can still save. Following these simple things will help you save money on gas.

One of the easiest ways to save on gas is by taking your foot off of the gas pedal. Speeding, rapid acceleration (jackrabbit starts), and rapid braking can lower gas mileage by 34% at highway speeds. Drivers can save up to 250 gallons of gasoline, or up to $914, by driving sensibly on the highway. I know people like to get to point A to point B as quickly as possible, and this includes myself, but if you don't press on the gas as much you will save money on gas.

A second tip to help you save on gas is trying to cut back on the miles you drive. If you can cut your vehicle miles traveled by just 6% through combining trips, walking, biking, or taking public transportation, you can save up to $92 per year on gasoline costs. I know a lot of people hate taking the bus or don't enjoy walking but doing this you will save a lot of money on gas. Also when you decide to buy a new car make sure you chose the right one meaning one that is gas efficient. If you own more than one vehicle, drive the one that gets better gas mileage whenever possible. If you drive 13,500 miles a year, switching 10% of your trips from driving a car that gets 20 mpg to one that gets 31 mpg will save you almost $61 per year. For me personally the next time that I need to buy a car I'm looking at a Toyota Prius or maybe even an electric car to help save money. I know these types of cars may be a little more expensive than a basic non hybrid type of car but in the end you could save more if you drive a lot and don't have to pay as much for gas.

Everyone is looking for ways to save money and one of the easier ways to do so is by cutting back how much you spend on gas.
