Saving The Pride Of India

Back in the early 1900s spotting a Tiger was just another walk through the jungle

. You were destined to spot at least one or two and if lucky some more. Years later that has certainly changed in India. Today the Tiger, the national animal of the country, has a meagre population of about 1500. NGOs and animal activists across the country and around the world have been demanding steps to curb the menace of poaching and the dangers of a possible extinction of the great Bengal tigers. But the man who started it all was not an Indian by origin.

Jim Corbett is hailed as one of the best tiger conservationist to have ever lived on earth. Born in the Nainital district of British India in 1875, Jim was a hunter who turned conservationist, author and naturalist and was well-known for hunting a large number of man-eater tigers and leopards in India. A Colonel in the British Army, Corbett was often called upon by government of the state to hunt man-eaters in the area. Corbetts success came in his ability to track, sense and differentiate a man-eating carnivore from one that wasnt. He was a highly respected individual and was immensely popular amongst the people of the villages especially in the region of Kumaon.

But hunting was something he did not cherish for long. After pains taking tracking and killing of the graceful animals, Corbett wanted to find the actual reason behind what lead them to become man-eaters. His observations would then be used by many animal conservationists to study tigers and leopards in the future. As a hunter turned conservationist, Jim lectured many students on what impact the nature had on human beings and how humans must always remain obliged to Mother Nature.

Jim also penned a number of books that are considered remain bestsellers till date. Some of his best works include Jungle Stories, Man-Eaters of Kumaon, The Man-eating Leopard of Rudraprayag, My India, Jungle Lore, The Temple Tiger and more man-eaters of Kumaon, Tree Tops, Jim Corbett's India - Selections by R.E. Hawkins and My Kumaon: Uncollected Writings.

Although being British, Jim Corbetts popularity has known no boundaries. He is revered and known as a person with very high regard for the nature and the animals dwelling in it. From a hunter to a conservationist, Corbett knew that hunting animals was not the solution to a greater problem that already existed. The growing human race. May be we human beings would decipher his thoughts and put them to good use for our well-being. But that too is just May Be!
