Saw 2
The first time I watched the movie Saw, I knew I was in for something special
. Not since the Scream trilogy had a series tried to take the concept of horror and market it to people who were intelligent instead of the babes and booze crowd that most such fare caters to. Saw 2 continued the same concept and really was a class act following on a class act.
In the second installment of the series, Jigsaw, the serial killer who made it his life's work to make Cary Elwes miserable is back with even trickier traps and games for all his visitors - I mean victims. As Jigsaw himself informs tells us, "Oh yes, there will be blood." But here's the real twist: Jigsaw is in police custody. The action takes place in a kind of split world where Jigsaw is having a pleasant conversation while his marks, 6 unfortunate souls, are stuck in a true house of horrors.
The people trapped in the house have 2 hours to find a way out or they'll all be dead. (In case you're wondering - there is a toxic gas buildup going on very slowly in the house which will kill every last one of them, but somehow if they get out within 2 hours, they can beat it.) But watch out - with Jigsaw there are no easy escapes and he will test their mettle and endurance at every turn. The contestants in Jigsaw's life and death game are a varied group, including Daniel (Erik Knudson) and Amanda (Shawnee Smith), a woman who has been "tested" by Jigsaw previously. The game
Each room of the house has a puzzle intended for one of the "contestants," complete with a cassette tape that explains for whom and why each trap has been set, with each of them being particularly fit for that person's particular "crime." The catch of course is that some of the people in the house die before they ever see their puzzles. This is a bit of a stretch since one would assume that Jigsaw had set traps for them too, but as with all things movies, that wouldn't make for an entertaining two hours.
With an even stronger story than the first movie, sicker and frankly even more imaginative traps, and better acting then the original, Saw 2 is one of those rare sequels that really is better than the movie that preceded it.
