Say Boo To Candy Sticks And Go For Real Halloween Sweet Treats
I admit, it brings out the kid in me
I admit, it brings out the kid in me. Halloween is one of those holidays that takes you back to a simple time where even the mere thought of candy could send you into a frenzy. Now, though, I have tired a bit of the traditional bags of candy sticks, chocolate bars, and sugary bits. What excites me now, is the thought of a different kind of sweet treat.
Bowls and bags full of candy are the stuff of childhood days. It was a time when cavities, calories, and even taste weren't the issue. It was all about that sweet, sugary rush. We never had candy in the house until Halloween. Honestly, it didn't last for long after that, either. So perhaps it was also about having a bit of the 'taboo'.
But it is time to move on.
Now it comes down to keeping the "sweet" tradition alive, but with a twist. I like to think I have evolved from eagerly unwrapping a candy stick, only to have it gone in an instant and perhaps be left with a broken tooth, or a slow-growing cavity. I like to think a bit of time and effort is the path I am ready to take.
You may not feel like taking time to bake, or to even buy fun Halloween treats. But if you're planning to entertain, consider
baked snacks, baked
sweet sticks, cupcakes, and other delicious desserts. Why? Because it's fun, and isn't that what this holiday is all about?
You may not bake like Betty Crocker, but surely you can manage to prepare some sweets that look "Halloween-ish" , and taste good too. Think about this list of recipes as a place to start, it's from allrecipes.com.
I believe that the secret is in being able to tap into your inner kid. Think less about how expert you are as a chef or a baker. Put aside concerns about impressing people with your culinary flair. Become a kid again and bake silly looking ghost cupcakes, bat-wing cookies, and ghoulish pies.
Anyone can go to the grocery and grab a bag of candy sticks. Resist that temptation and create a Halloween treat that is deliciously fun, scary - in a good way, and that brings out the kid in your guests.
Your adult Halloween party doesn't have to be all kid stuff though. While you're feeling creative with the sweets, let that carry over to the beverages. We found a nice list of Halloween cocktails you can serve. Check this out from Food and Wine.
Whether you choose to don a costume is completely up to you, but at least get into the true spirit of Halloween, skip the packaged candy sticks, and scare up a few baked treats. The inner kid in you will howl with delight.
