Saying No - The Revolutionary Ways To Say This
You know that person in your life, that one who is too nice
? The one that is always saying yes, and therefore always being taken advantage of? We all know someone like this, and for many that person is actually us. Being able to say know is an important skill to have, as it offers protection for your emotional well being and boosts your self-esteem. But saying no can be hard, especially if you are used to saying yes all the time. Here then are some ways to learn how to say no - starting with three changes you need to make to your personal mindset in order to be successful.
1. Accept the idea that your need to say yes might come from a deeper desire to be accepted, liked and needed. These needs are universal to all people, but meeting them in this way is not healthy, and is actually detrimental to your overall emotional well being. Considering other ways to improve your self esteem will help you learn to say no.
2. Stop feeling guilty about saying no. There is nothing wrong with saying no, and in many cases it's better for the other person if you make them do it themselves. And remember, people will prey upon your feelings of guilt, and use them to try to convince you to do things you don't want to do.
3. Be prepared for the first time to be hard! When people are used to you always saying yes, they will try to convince you, even if you say no right away. Be prepared to stand your ground, and remember that by saying no, you are protecting your self esteem and encouraging them to do things on their own.
Once you have changed the way you think about saying no, then you can use these ways to actually say no:
1. When you say no, tell the person why. If you don't want to do it, say so. If you don't have the time, say so.
2. Explain how you feel. If you feel like the person is always taking advantage of you, explain that to them.
3. Be polite, and apologize. However, doing these things might make the person think that he or she can convince you. If this happens, then you might have to:
4. Get blunt. Tell the other person point blank that you won't be manipulated into doing something you don't want to do, and that you are saying no.
By changing the way you think about saying no, you will be able to actually say no. It will be hard at first, but as with any new skill, practice will make it easier. And as you learn to say no, you are likely to find that those around you respect you and your time a lot more.
