Saying The Kaddish Helps Those In Mourning
The power of prayer is something that even scientists have been able to measure with some amount of success
. They have recognized that it truly can help people emotionally and physically cope with pain and grief. When a loved one passes away prayer often becomes central to our ability to handle the blow of the loss. In Judaism part of your task as a mourner is to use prayer to help lift your loved one's spirit closer to G-d. For the purpose of that spiritual life the Jewish people have always used the Kaddish, a meaningful prayer that is spoken whenever anyone is sitting Shiva.
The Kaddish or the Jewish prayer for the dead, is an integral part of Jewish culture. The Jewish faith like most faiths takes mourning very seriously. Judaism though approaches mourning in a completely different way than any other religion. Sitting Shiva is a vital part of this very specific mourning process. Immediate family members (father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister) must take a week to sit Shiva after a family member dies. During this time those immediate family members must gather in one home where they receive visitors. The occurrence generally happens in the home of the deceased.
While sitting Shiva there are many prayer services held and often the Kaddish is an integral part of them. As the voices join together to pray for the soul of the deceased it is felt they are moved further and further up. Long after the seven day span of sitting Shiva ends the Kaddish is likely still a major part of any Jewish person's regular prayers. There are even services where you can pay to have your loved one included in a Kaddish being said in Israel. In all of these efforts the spirit of the deceased is the driving force. The prayer itself makes a plea to G-d to be praised and to help the children of Israel by accepting their spirits. For the mourners speaking the Jewish prayer of the dead the affects can be emotionally fraught and can also offer some real spiritual and emotional relief. Simply saying the prayer regularly can help loosen up the ties binding one's heart in sadness.
When you say the Kaddish for someone or invest in services in which someone else says the Kaddish for your loved one the intended purpose is to make a bold statement to the lord on behalf of your loved one. This is a vital spiritual truth and also good therapy for those in mourning.
