Scabies In Schools

School is one of the places where children are likely to catch scabies

, as it is where they spend most part of their day and come into contact with kids who may unknowingly be infected.

Catching Scabies at school might result from close interactions with the infected kid, hanging coats on the same rack, prolonged physical contact like playing, wrestling etc. People may have it for several weeks before knowing they were infected and this is what makes it easy to spread.

Scabies is an infestation caused by Sarcoptes scabiei mites that burrow in the skin layers causing itching sensation and rashes on the body. Symptoms are usually found in various parts of the body like elbows, groin, in between toes, fingers, hands etc. Scabies spreads primarily through physical contact; either by touching the infected person or by coming into contact with the things used by him like bed sheets, toilet seats, towels, soaps etc.

Parents whose kid has been diagnosed with scabies should alert the school authorities about it as soon as possible. But the child should be given the treatment first and only then is he permitted to return to school. Many parents are concerned that there child will be ostracized, but other parents needs to be informed when there is a problem that is contagious such as lice, scabies or chicken pox.

Parents and siblings of the child can also come into contact with disease-causing mites due to the geographical proximity and intimacy they share as a family. Doctors advise that the whole family apply the permethrin cream at same time so that there wont be further contamination issues. The bed and household also need to be properly treated by being sure that everything is washed and dried in hot water or bagged that had been worn.

Unlike other bacterial infections, scabies mites do not fly; they only walk from one part of the body to the other and burrow in the top layer of the skin. They are not visible to the eye.

Treatment Tips for Children Catching Scabies at School:

Wash the childs clothes, bed linen etc regularly.

Family members should refrain from sharing their beds, bed linen and toiletries with the infected kid.

Apply the lotion containing permethrin to the childs body in the evening and wash it off in the morning. All family members should be using the cream.

The infected child might be prone to itching, rashes, irritability etc.

Advice him not to scratch and help him understand the situation. Use moisturizers and antihistamines to help with the itching sensations.
