Scenic Walks in and around Windermere
Having recently registered for a 15km charity walk I was keen to find some local walks I could use for a practice run. How fortunate that I live so near to the town of Windermere in the beautiful Lake District National Park. Slightly spoilt for choice, let me tell you about some of the walks I found.
Not having done any form of exercise for well over 10 years, you will not be surprised to learn that the following walks all fall under the easy' category, but that does not detract from their beauty.
Firstly, a superb walk incorporating the bay at Bowness with its bustling marine activities and the two splendid, but not too lofty vantage points of "Biskey Howe" and "Post Knott". This 3.5 mile (5.6 Km) walk takes approximately 2.5 hours.
Another great place to explore is Far Sawrey. You can take an excellent walk with that combines a spectacular shoreline footpath and a fascinating woodland trail, with the
unspoilt rural landscape around Far Sawrey. A walk of around 5 miles (8 Kms) takes approximately 3.5 hours and includes crossing Lake Windermere as a foot passenger
on the ferry.
Undermillbeck Common not quite so common as its name would suggest provides
the opportunity to appreciate the subtle seasonal changes, as you meander through the
quiet and unspoiled countryside. Be warned that this peaceful route can be very muddy underfoot.
A spectacular walk along the shoreline of Lake Windermere, returning through Near Sawrey - countryside made famous by the works of Beatrix Potter will equate to approximately 7.5 miles (12 Kms) and take about 5 hours including a crossing on the ferry.
Last but not least a wonderful Cumbrian country walk that takes you through part of the quiet and secluded, but extremely delightful Winster Valley will take around 3 hours but again may be quite muddy underfoot.
All of these walks start and end near to the lovely Linthwaite House Hotel so why not finish your walk with a well-deserved lunch or afternoon tea on their beautiful terrace overlooking Lake Windermere. If the weather isn't too good as it is known to rain at times in the Lake District, they also have a conservatory which shares the same view or a comfy seat near a roaring open fire.
