Scented Candles Create Emotional Content In A Space

Do you know which of our five senses is the most influential to how we are feeling and the one that when stimulated instantly recalls emotions and memories

? Is it sight, sound, touch, taste, or smell? If you answered "smell" you would be absolutely correct. The human sense of smell is the one most closely located to the limbic part of the brain, the most basic area that controls memory and emotion. The sense of smell is also the one sense that we can't turn off at will. It affects us during both waking and sleeping hours, even influencing dreams.

Our sense of smell works often on an unconscious level, meaning we are often not aware of the influence a scent is having on our feelings or memories. Have you ever suddenly had feelings of sadness or happiness for no apparent reason? Have you ever suddenly had a memory from your childhood from out of the blue? Both of these were probably triggered by a fragrance, perhaps even one so subtle that you were not consciously aware of it. Perhaps the fragrance of chocolate chip cookies fresh from the oven made you feel warm and secure, bringing up memories of grandma. Perhaps it was the smell of fresh cut grass taking you back to playful childhood summers.

The powerful sense of smell is one of the reasons highly fragrant, scented candles are so popular. Good quality candles with true fragrances create an emotional content to a space that goes deep into the unconscious mind. They create a comforting, relaxing space where you want to spend time. A room can be magazine perfect visually, but if it smells bad, no one wants to be there and it will be perceived negatively. Likewise, a room with older, even shabby furnishings that has a pleasing fragrance will be comfortable and perceived as a positive place to be. The sense of smell overrides every other sense.

Scented candles allow you to create the mood and emotional content of any space. This trick is well known to realtors who often burn sugar cookie or cinnamon bun scented candles in homes they show to potential buyers. It makes the house feel like home and creates an emotional attachment. It is used in businesses to improve perception and instant recall of their brands, most famously the "new car smell" that is actually a fragrance sprayed into the car.

Well-chosen fragrances are proven to enhance moods, to relax or energize. You can use these same "tricks" in your home with fragrant, scented candles to create a space that you not only want to be in, but to be happy in.
