The natural health researchers at Institute for Vibrant Living (IVL) have investigated the allergens and toxins generated in the home by household products. Here is one in a series of reports:

A Fresh Scented Danger?

The scented products we use to make our homes clean and fragrant may contain toxins that put our families' health at risk. The temptation to buy and use scented products is strong because we are constantly bombarded with advertisements for sprays, soaps, detergents and fabric softeners that promise to make our homes a fresh, fragrant haven of floral aromas and fresh lemony scents.

The truth of the matter is that the only safe way to get a floral aroma is with real flowers and the only toxic-free way to enjoy lemony scents is to use lemons.

The Science

According to a recent study conducted at the University of Washington, at least 25 of the top selling scented cleaning products contain chemicals that are classified as potentially toxic or hazardous by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Some of the most commonly used chemicals are limone (a compound with a citrus scent) and alpha-pinene and beta-pinene which emit a pine scent.

Many scented products contain formaldehyde (a known carcinogen) and phenol which is a highly toxic skin irritant.

When these products are used in a confined area the toxins they emit are highly concentrated.

Synthetically fragranced products that come in an aerosol spray form release tiny droplets that can be inhaled or absorbed into the skin, eyes or mouth.

A Natural Approach

The good news is that it is easy to avoid these dangerous compounds because Mother Nature has provided us with plenty of alternatives that can be safely used to keep our homes clean, fresh and fragrant.

Lemon juice is one of nature's best cleansers. It has a bright, fresh smell and can be used to sanitize hard surfaces such as counters or to safely wash copper-bottomed pots and pans. It is also a natural bleaching agent which can be used on white linens and clothing.

Baking soda is another chemical-free substance that can be used to clean and deodorize your home. It can be used to neutralize strong odors in drains and refrigerators and to clean aluminum, porcelain and stainless steel.

Grapefruit seed extract can be mixed with warm water and used on almost all surfaces. Essential oils, which can be purchased at natural health stores, can be combined with other natural ingredients to make environmentally friendly cleansers and deodorizers.

Frankincense and patchouli essential oils can be mixed with warm water and used to clean and purify surfaces throughout the home. Lavender and lemon essential oils can be combined with warm water to remove tough grease stains.

A Change For The Better

The risks associated with synthetically scented cleaning products are well-documented and easily avoided. Use only natural products for your annual spring cleaning and make life healthier for you, your family and your planet.
