Schedule of 2012 Olympic Games in London released

Though they're more than a year away, London is gearing up for the 2012 Olympic Games. Most recently, the council released the schedule of events, giving fans of the international games something to look forward to, according to BBC.

The first event, women's soccer, will take place on July 25 in Cardiff, Glasgow and Coventry. These matches will take place two days before the official opening of the games.

One of the most highly anticipated events, the men's 100 meter final, will take place on Sunday, August 5. Fans will have the chance to see if Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt has what it takes to win the gold.

All of the dates, times and venues for the Olympic games will be made available to those who have signed up for information prior to the ticket sale date of March 15. There will be more than 600 different events featuring every one of the 26 eligible Olympic sports.

"This is a really big moment, a huge moment," chairman of the 2012 games Sebastian Coe told the news source. Coe has won four Olympic medals. "In my own experience as a competitor this is the point that it suddenly becomes very real."

Coe reminisced about the moment when he received the schedule for the Los Angeles games, where he ran seven races in nine days. He added that it appears as though the London games will be quite popular.

Many of those who are planning a trip to England for the big games will have a family member or friend back home who will be able to wire money should they encounter an unexpected expense.

The opening ceremonies will take place on Friday, July 27, in the Olympic stadium. The following day viewers can catch the men's cycling road race. British hopeful Mark Cavendish will participate in that event.

On July 29, swimmers will have the chance to show their skills during the women's 400m freestyle. Aquatic wonder Michael Phelps and Ian Thorpe may go head-to-head the following day during the 200m freestyle.
