Tanzania has many national parks & game reserves which has many bird species that can be watched by tourists when on tour Tanzania. We have national parks & game reserves on coastal regions, southern, northern and on the highlands.
There are both scheduled and charter flights which are the means of air transport to the tourist destinations offered by air operators .Hotel chains have 3 star, 4 star, 5 star hotels where accommodation is offered in major cities whereas in the national parks and game reserves they have extended their wings there providing lodges, tented camps and mobile camping and all this is segmented to suit each individual needs and wants. We also have an option of going by road and there are 4 by 4 landcruisers, land rover which you can hire if you are a budget tourist and tour operators and travel agents have put together their synergies and have packages which are discounted that you purchase accommodation, meals, game drives, transport under one room other than purchasing each services separately which works out to be very expensive. There are also flying packages segmented in the following category, flying air packages on scheduled flights and flying packages on charter services which are on per seat basis and a full aircraft charter.
We have several bird species but we will describe on a few found in Tanzania national parks and game reserves as below,
Rufous-Tailed Weaver
A species that occurs locally, mainly in northern Tanzania ,being very common in areas of the Serengeti, particularly around Ndutu and Naabi Hill.A large weaver with the feathers of the head, mantle back and wing coverts dark brown boldly edged with buff/grey .The chin, throat,breast,belly and flanks are grey/buff streaked and spotted with dark brown. The primary and secondary flight feathers are dark brown and chestnut narrowly edged with buff. The central tail feathers are dark brown; the outer feathers are rich chestnut. The eyes are very pale blue, the bill is black and the legs and feet are grey/black. The sexes are alike.Resident.Size:22cm
Red-Collared Widowbird
Locally common throughout the region encountered in areas of rank grassland, scrub and bush. In breeding plumage the male has a long flowing tail, the entire plumage being black with the exception of a broad scarlet breast band. In the highlands of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda this species also has the crown, nape and sides of the neck scarlet. The primary and secondary flight feathers are edged with buff/white .The female has the upper plumage dark brown boldly edged and streaked with tawny/buff. The chin and throat are yellowish/buff, the breast is buff, the belly and under parts white. In non-breeding plumage the male has similar plumage to the female but is larger and more heavily streaked above. The eyes are dark brown. The bill of the breeding male is black and at other times is buff/grey like that of thefemale.The legs and feet are blackish.Resident.Size: Breeding male 28cm, female 13cm.
Jacksons Widowbird
A species f highland regions at elevations over 1,500m in western and central Kenya and northern Tanzania .The male in breeding plumage has a long decurved tail and almost entirely black feathering ,the only exceptions being a yellow/brown shoulder patch and the flight feathers having brown edges. Males are often seen displaying, leaping several feet into the air from deep grass. The female has the upper feathering dark brown boldly edged and streaked with buff. The underside is buff with darker streaking on the breast and flanks. In non-breeding plumage the male is similar to the female but is generally browner. The eyes are dark brown, the bill of the breeding male is blue/grey, and the bill of the female is yellow/grey.The legs and feet are black.Resident.Size: Breeding male 36cm, female 14cm.
Hildebrandt's Starling
A bird of southern Kenya and northern Tanzania inhabiting areas of bush, lightly wooded savannah and cultivated farmland, often being encountered in small flocks foraging on the ground. A typical starling with very attractive plumage. The upperparts, wings and tail are a metallic blue, as are the chin, throat and upper breast. The tips of the wing converts and the secondary flight feathers are black. The lower breast, belly and undeparts are rich chestnut/orange. The eyes are bright red, the bill, legs and feet are black. The sexes are alike. This species can easily be confused with the Superb Starling (Lamprotornis superbus), which although similar has a narrow white breast band, white under tail converts and creamy-white eyes.Resident.Size: 18cm.
Ashy Starling
A locally common species in areas of acacia woodland and lightly wooded grasslands, particularly in the vicinity of baobab trees. There are many in and around Tarangire National Park in Tanzania. Compared with other starling species of the region, the Ashy Starling has rather dull uninteresting plumage, being almost uniform ashy-brown. The cheeks chin, throat and the primary and secondary flight feathers are usually a slightly darker brown and the very long graduated tail often shows faint vermiculations.The eyes are pale yellow, the bill, legs and feet are black. Immature birds are usually greyer than adults. The sexes alike.Resident.Size:30cm.
House Crow
A species introduced from Asia towards the end of the nineteenth century, which is now well established and quite numerous in the coastal region of Kenya and Tanzania. The hind-crown, neck and breast are dusky-grey, the upper plumage is glossy blue/black with a sheen of purple on the wings. The belly and under parts are blue/black with a wash of grey.The eyes are dark brown, the bill, legs and feet are black. Immature birds lack the plumage gloss of the adults. The sexes are alike.Resident.Size.33cm.
