Schizophrenia can be effectively controlled by atypical antipsychotics Quetiapine (Seroquel)

The disorder may afflict anyone and is as prevalent in men as in women. It can be found in equal percentage throughout all races and regions worldwide. The patient becomes dependant on family or the society, as he is not able to take care of himself or get regular employment. It is wrong to consider all Schizophrenics to be violent. Violence, if any, may stem from reaction towards a feeling of being victimized and may aim towards the family. Suicide incidents are very high with 10% (esp. young adult males) dying by suicide.

Schizophrenia Cause

The exact causes of Schizophrenia have not been ascertained as yet. It generally starts earlier in men (around teenage years) and may occur in women from mid 20s to early 30s. There are indications that Schizophrenia is a hereditary disorder passes on genetically. The chances of Schizophrenia increase with the bond of relation with a patient. A twin of schizophrenic will have a very high chance of developing the same disorder. Direct family relative like parent, brother, sister have almost 10% chance of getting such a condition followed by second relatives.

It is believed that there is no single gene involved in causing or increasing chances of Schizophrenia. The process of discovering all the genes and their actual impact are still being studied. Apart from genes, doctor's are also of the opinion that various other factors like certain viruses, undernourishment during pregnancy, difficult birth and other psychosocial factors still being researched; also play a major part in this disorder. Generally those older than 45 years do not have Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia Symptoms

It is very difficult to detect Schizophrenia at a young age. Symptoms include new friend circle, sleeping issues, anger and falling education results. Such symptoms are almost passed off as normal in most teens. There are certain indications, which if assessed together, can help doctors, diagnose it earlier. These indications include isolation or withdrawal from social circle, rise in strange thoughts/suspicions and family history of psychosis.

Schizophrenia symptoms can be classified into three categories:

Positive Symptoms - Symptoms in which the patient may have on - off characteristics wherein they may not be able to identify with their surroundings. The severity of this type of symptoms is medication dependant. These includes:

Hallucinations

Delusions

Confused thought process

Uncontrolled movements

Negative Symptoms unusual emotions or actions that can be easily diagnosed as depression etc. Includes:

Flat Effect (as if a lifeless drone)

Depresses outlook

Lack of initiative or consistency in new tasks

Minimal communication even on applying pressure

Cognitive Symptoms

Poor decision making skills

Inability to focus or be attentive

Unable to process recent information and utilize it

Schizophrenia Treatment

Since the exact cause is not yet ascertained, the treatment is basically focused on eliminating symptoms, Generally atypical antipsychotics like Quetiapine (Seroquel) are prescribed in treating Schizophrenia. Quetiapine's (Seroquel)

exact mechanism of action is not certain but has proven to be a very effective medication against Schizophrenia. General dosage is once or thrice a day, as per Physician's advice.
