A college education, with a degree of course, can be one of the smartest investments you make in your, or your child's, lifetime. However, and unfortunately, it can also be the most expensive one. The cost of college tuition seems to increase daily.
Every year more students, and their parents, are making the decision to attend community college for a couple years before heading to a four year college. Significantly lower tuition costs make it much more affordable and commuting eliminates the need for room and board.
Unfortunately, many of these same students, and parents, think that since community college is so affordable, scholarships for community college students don't exist. If that's what you think, guess what, you're wrong.
There are many private and non-profit organizations, businesses and individuals who fund scholarships for these students. By providing these scholarship opportunities, the individuals and groups have and opportunity, within their own community, to influence many more students with a smaller amount of money than would be required at a four year school.
As an example, Pierce College, in the Los Angeles Community College District, recently announced the Fred J. Aves Foundation awarded a total of $65,000 in scholarships to dedicated students who are enrolled in various technical and vocational programs, such as, nursing, teaching and automotive technology.
As another example, sophomore students studying environmental sciences at a community college in the State of Ohio are eligible for a $1250.00 scholarship that is being awarded through the Ohio Environmental Science and Engineering Scholarship Program.
And in Missouri, the Governor recently authorized a 30% increase in scholarships for community college students.
In California, the California Land Surveyors association provides scholarships to community college students throughout the state.
The National Society of Collegiate Scholars actually offers scholarship opportunities for community college students who are interested in studying abroad.
In the online world, you can find sites such as ScholarshipHooray.org that provide multiple scholarship opportunities in one easy location. The scholarships offered here are awarded monthly, for as much as $10,000, have few if any restrictions and there is no essay required, like most, if not all the others.
Once you have finished your degree at community college you may be eligible for The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation's Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, the largest of it's kind in the country, which provides money for students transferring to a four year school.
As you can see, the scholarship opportunities being offered to community college students are almost as abundant as the students themselves.
