Sometimes teachers can find it difficult to really engage with pupils. Whilst some children fly through the academic process, others struggle with common learning principles, with the classroom setting or with the subject areas themselves. For pupils who are avid fans of sport, a sports tour is an ideal way to engage with them on a subject they really care about. Sport tours cover a range of sports and they could be cricket or football tours, to a netball or rugby tour, but they are all a great chance to engage with individuals and the team as a whole. It's a chance to communicate with them on a level they enjoy and therefore a good way to keep their attention. It's also an opportunity to teach them about related subjects in a way they can access, such as health, nutrition and fitness. For trips to developing communities, it's also a chance to engage them onto topics regarding social, economic and cultural issues, which can be hard to demonstrate in the classroom.

Pupils will often engage better when they are given a bit of freedom from time to time. A chance to be wearing their own informal clothes and to see their teachers in a different environment can be a refreshing change.

Rewarding Pupils.

A trip is a reward in itself and any child who has the opportunity to go on a school sports tour will feel rewarded. For sports teams, a trip can be a chance to reward the team members who don't always flourish on the playing field, by offering more opportunities for them to succeed. This is also a chance to reward pupils who are less academic and therefore don't thrive in the classroom; for children who excel at sport rather than maths, this is their chance to shine. A sports tour can even be rewarding for pupils who do succeed in the classroom, as it can offer a well needed distraction from the pressures of academic study.

Extra Time.

Teachers often complain that they do not get sufficient time to engage with certain pupils as there are so many children in each class. Marking, paperwork and the general demands of teaching can sometimes take away from reaching a child who needs it. A trip, be it a football or rugby tour, will provide more opportunities for teachers to spend time with those children who could do with extra attention, even if this is not related to sports or learning. Some children who are lacking in confidence may benefit from this extra time.

A change of scenery, a break from the classroom and a focus on sports are all part of a sporting school trip. These are all ways that teachers can engage better with pupils. An emphasis on sports will also be a good chance to reward certain pupils whose talents lie in sport rather than academia.
