Scoliosis Awareness Month: Learn How You Can Help

June is National Scoliosis Awareness month

June is National Scoliosis Awareness month. If you suffer from scoliosis, as 7 million in the United States do, you know how much back pain can affect your every day life. Scoliosis is a medical condition where a person's spine is curved, either in the shape of an "s" or a "c." If you are not aware of scoliosis, perhaps you should educate yourself, because it may just be the reason you experience the back pain you do.

Scoliosis affects children, adults, and the elderly alike. Most cases of scoliosis start when children are in middle school. For this reason, some schools offer free scoliosis screening to children in middle school gym classes to see if they are at risk or beginning to form the condition. A mild curvature of the spine is no reason to get surgery or visit a doctor, but a larger curvature of the spine should be checked on.

There are a number of different ways to help scoliosis. There is no cure, but things can be done to stop the progression of the curve and to improve the pain and mobility of those who suffer from the medical condition. For the most extreme cases, patients may need to have surgery to correct their spine or wear a brace to keep their spine from progressively getting worse. It's important to catch the condition early, so that the necessary steps can be taken to prevent it from getting to the point where you need surgery.

Most of the symptoms of scoliosis are things you can physically see. You might notice asymmetrical breasts or hip bones. You might have a shoulder blade that juts out significantly more than the other one. Other symptoms can be back pain and limited mobility. These symptoms can be cured by a visit to the chiropractor and a regimen of exercise and physical therapy to stop the curve and strengthen the spine.

Chiropractors are a favorite among those who suffer from scoliosis, because they practice natural medicine. They don't use drugs or surgeries to help treat scoliosis. They perform adjustments to the spine which realigns the spine and helps to keep it straighter. They will also often work with a physical or massage therapist who will help relax the muscles of the spine so patients will not only have a straighter spine, but they will have less pain and more mobility.

If you think you might be suffering from scoliosis, you should make an appointment with your local chiropractor or sports therapist. They can often help you with your condition and will set up a regimen for you to visit a number of times to stop the progression of scoliosis and help you to feel better. You may have to visit once a week at first, depending on the severity of your condition. If you suffer from scoliosis, you can donate to the National Scoliosis Foundation. This foundation is a non-profit organization that promotes scoliosis education and research to try and find a solid cure for the condition.
