Glasgow used to be seen as Edinburgh's poor relation, but now it's one of the most visited cities in the UK. Since it was designated one of the European Cities of Culture in 1990, Glasgow has been undergoing a revolution in terms of style, investment and culture.

It was named City of Architecture and Design in 1999; in 2003 it was Capital of Sport and in 2008 it became the second Scottish city to join UNESCO's Creative Cities list and was designed a UNESCO City of Music.

Glasgow is often known for its ugly concrete architecture that was thrown up in the 1970s. But, not too much exploring reveals two other sides to this city's architecture.

On one side you'll find elegant Victorian terraces and Edwardian town houses many of which use red or blonde sandstone that gleams in the evening sun. The other side is filled with a wealth of art-nouveau architecture lead by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

But what really sets Glasgow apart from other cities in Britain is its music scene, which really is like no other. The city actively supports and nurtures homegrown talent and its live music scene is thriving. It possesses hundreds of venues and puts on numerous events and gigs across the city, many of which are free. No wonder it earned itself UNESCO recognition. It's music scene can only rival London, all other cities pale into insignificance.

Head to the banks of the River Clyde two see the past and the future of this great city all at once. The riverfront is being completely redeveloped with stylish, modern apartments and houses, luxury serviced office blocks and trendy, fusion restaurants that regularly get tipped to be the next hot thing'.

Nestled among this modernity are remnants of Glasgow's powerful maritime history found along walkways and quaysides and in museums and galleries too. This is a city that embraces its past to help it move forward. Glaswegians are known for their no-nonsense nature and never is this truer than with the city itself. The story of Glasgow is told like it is, stripping away and glean that other cities adopt to plaster over any problems or embarrassing histories.

The small city centre is easy to navigate on food and you have a wealth of hotels to choose from to suit every budget. The city centre is where you'll find the larger, more luxury hotels but the west end is a good place to stay if you want a more bohemian abode.
