Comics and graphic novels now often represent big bucks to film producers and many of the world's most popular superheroes and villains have made it to the big screen already. However, the transition from comic to film can be a difficult one just think of the very mixed reaction to the film re-make of Alan Moore's seminal comic Watchmen or the shaky reception of the Punisher film. On the other hand, it's safe to say that if the subject matter is handled well and all the elements work perfectly, then there is a lot of money, and new fans, to be made when comic characters are given a 3D makeover.

Edgar Wright, co-creator of Spaced and Shaun of the Dead was the right man for the job when it came to putting Scott Pilgrim on screen, as his track record has proven an ability to blend the surreal with the real to excellent comic effect.

In Scott Pilgrim normal events are given a new and often bizarre spin, and its in the comics themselves that many aspects of the modern world the wide-spread knowledge of gaming, film and new media devices are given great precedence by being worked into the very fabric of the stories themselves. The liberal use of video game imaginary helps to blur the line between medias, making it even easier for watchers to immerse themselves in the big screen version of the comic.

The content of the film also differs quite dramatically from the books in places, and this is the kind of decisions that runs the risk of alienating hardcore fans of the series. However, as the mediums have their different strengths and ways of being consumed, it can be argued that it is to the best end effort that original story lines are tweaked and modified to fit in with a cinema experience.

For many of the original fans of the series, you can expect the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World DVD to be sitting on the shelf alongside the comics while those new to the series may find themselves inspired by the film to go out and read the back catalogue. When a character successfully makes the transition from paper to screen, you can rest assured people will want to hear more about them whatever medium it may be in.
